Women
Sikhism embraces the equality of men and women, and women will play an equal role in Gurdwara operations. A dedicated sub-committee on women’s issues will focus on pressing issues such as lack of support services, social inequality, lack of female representation in Sikh leadership, and domestic violence in the Punjabi Sikh community.
The sub-committee on women’s issues in our community will ensure that a significant amount of Gurdwara resources are directed towards addressing these issues. The sub-committee will be comprised of professional Sikh females currently active in fields related to social services, victim services, counselling, professional leadership, and other areas that would benefit women in the sangat of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib, Surrey, BC.
Mai Bhago Safe House
The issue of domestic violence has plagued the Sikh community in recent years fuelled by social inequality. As a long term goal, we plan to set up the Mai Bhago Safe House which will allow victims of domestic violence to escape abuse and allow them to rebuild their lives in a safe and supportive environment. We hope to build a team of professional Punjabi speaking counselors and support staff who will be integral to the success of this program.
It is our hope to link, liaise, and organize with community based organizations currently offering programs for women to address the lack of support services for women.
Counselling and support services will be brought in directly at the Gurdwara Sahib in an effort to reach a large number of women in our community. We will focus on education and empowering women in becoming strong, educated, and active members of the community.

I wish to your sangat only blessings. I know that with the support of Waheguruji you will make a difference. You will make a difference in the lives of so many women and their families. With the Grace of Satguruji your advocacy will spread far and wide. Other sangats will follow in your footsteps, and there will be no stopping your message and your good labor.
As your project progresses, I hope that you will keep updating this web site. letting the world know of your seva. At Sikh Philosophy Network, we will continue to stay in touch and keep our membership updated with news of your good work.

You say there should be greater female representation in Sikh leadership, yet there are only 3 women on the youth slate. Kind of contradictory, wouldn’t you say?
Dear Suzanne,
Thank you very much for your comment! We are very happy to have these three Sikh women on the slate and if it was up to us, we would have more Sikh women on the slate. Unfortunately our community is still hesitant to allow their daughters & sisters to get involved, but we are changing the image of the Gurdwara and bring a fresh perspective. Due to this, the new slate has given a lot of confidence to Sikh women and now there will be a dedicated “Sikh Women’s Task Group” as well as more involvement of girls & women in the Gurdwara’s management.
Sincerely,
